Vocab Lab: Exploring Vocabulary with Xylo and Coz

Alien space traveler Xylo is on a mission to explore Earth and learn all he can about vocabulary. Luckily, he gets a little help from Coz, a stray cat who happens to be a vocab whiz. Together, they take students on a colorfully animated adventure filled with mystery, thrills and plenty of laughs. Each of five episodes combines words and images to create memorable lessons. A Teacher’s Resource Book continues the learning with illustrated reproducible worksheets.

Word Parts

When Xylo and Coz are caught goofing off on their mission, they find themselves replaced by the bossy Lt. Veda. Determined to outsmart her, our heroes follow Veda to the castle of Dr. Wordkenstein—where they learn how to combine base words with prefixes and suffixes.

When Xylo and Coz find themselves on a blockbuster movie set, trouble is not far behind. On a journey of disastrous misadventures, they learn the importance of correctly using synonyms and antonyms. They even get a writing lesson from a big Hollywood scriptwriter.

The Island of Confusing Words

The daring duo accidentally beam themselves to a deserted island, where Veda tries to prevent them from escaping. Their only hope is to learn more about troublesome words such as its and it’s, your and you’re, and their, there and they’re. Will it be too late for these two castaways to make it home?

Night of the Context Clues

Xylo and Coz decide to camp out in the History Museum. While there, they learn how context clues can help a reader discover the meaning of unknown words. With Lt. Veda’s help, they also learn how context clues can improve vocabulary skills and make reading more fun.

Spies, School and Reference Tools

Thinking they’re cleverly disguised, Xylo and Coz go undercover in a middle school to investigate the proper use of a dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia. While learning how to use print and online versions of these resources, they accidentally land a starring role in the school talent show. Produced by LearningWave
