Using a peer-to-peer approach, this program educates students about the risks of teenage pregnancy. A young mother describes how becoming pregnant changed her life and forced her to defer her dreams of college and a career. A teen father discusses how fatherhood changed his life and stresses that sexually active males must share the responsibility for preventing pregnancies. An abstinent teen shares her reasons for her choice. For those who aren’t abstinent, program emphasizes that knowing the facts and using contraception effectively and consistently greatly reduces the chances of a pregnancy. Special attention is paid to exposing common myths that put teens at greater risk for pregnancy and deceive teens into thinking it’s safe to have sex without contraception.

The strength of this film is the honest information presented by real teens. Ashley, a teen mother, must defer her dreams of college and a career. Her husband, unlike most teen fathers, is taking responsibility for his child. He says that he never thought Ashley would get pregnant even though they never used contraception. Another teenage father works 10 to 12 hour days to support his family. There is no time for higher education and little time to spend with his family or go out with friends. Even as these two young couples lovingly care for their babies, their regret is palpable. Caitlin, a college senior, explains her reasons for practicing abstinence. The “Let’s Talk about It” and “Myths of Unprotected Sex” sections address concerns of teens who find abstinence unrealistic. The segues between the segments are seamlessly narrated by a teenager. Viewers will relate to their peers in this film and will find the information presented about teen pregnancy and parenting sobering.

Recommended In a relationship it is the responsibility of both parties to avoid pregnancy. This film’s main purpose is to deter young people from having unprotected sex and to consider abstinence. The myths about sex and contraception are disclosed and statistical data and facts are presented.
Viewers are introduced to two young families with children, a teenage single mother and teen couple. Both parties engage in a conversation about their struggles and how being teen parents has dramatically changed their personal lives. For those who already have children, it can be used as a motivational piece. In addition, a college student openly discusses her decision to practice abstinence.
I recommend this film be viewed in sex education classes and counseling sessions. The accompanying student activities and facts sheets are a welcome addition to the program that reinforces material observed and can lead to a discussion session. I also recommend that this film be shown in conjunction with Thinking About Abstinence, a film distributed by Human Relations Media.
