The program explains that genetic differences in temperment and personality manifest themselves in the ways that individuals react to stress. Some cope by running away from problems, others by confrontation and others involve themselves in drugs and unconscious defense mechanisms such as denial and rationalization.
Several dramatic vignettes are shown which demonstrate unproductive coping mechanisms such as using drugs, avoidance, confrontation and submission. A facilitator reviews the vignettes with a studio audience of young people. Each vignette is revisited, this time dramatizing principles of healthy coping such as compromise, self-talk, relabelling, finding the winning alternatives and desensitization to stress. After viewing the program, students should feel empowered with a positive attitude that they can cope well with many different kinds of stress.
